Old Prospect Cemetery

The Gospel Advocate (March 7, 1867, Vol. IX, No. 10) carried the following:  Bro. Srygley writes: "With aid of Brother J.T. Wood, a congregation was constituted at Prospect, six miles Southwest of Moulton, Ala., last fall.  We now number sixteen, who have agreed to keep house for the Lord."  These were the roots of what today is known as Landersville Church of Christ which held its Homecoming June 2, 2002 (136 years after Bro. Wood planted that congregation at "Old Prospect."  Not much is known about the Prospect congregation other than a hint of existence preserved in written memoirs of those who served there.  The building has been long gone and only the cemetery remains to mark the resting places of the saints who once worshipped there.

Bro. F.D. Srygley wrote in his book, Larimore and His Boys:Grave of Bro. J.W. Srygley

"Dates are some somewhat confusing along here, and it is difficult to determine the exact time of many of his meetings from 1870-1880.  It seems that his first successful meeting in Lawrence County, Alabama was in the summer of 1871, though it might possibly have been in 1873.  It was held in a country church called Prospect, near Landersville.  The meeting house, in a general way, was much the same as the Old Rock Creek Church described in the former chapter, and the membership of the church consisted mainly of J.W. Srygley and family and a few others.  This was another of John Taylor's preaching points.  The meeting resulted in over thirty additions to the church, and in after years old Prospect was given up to the owls and bats, a comfortable and commodious house was built in Landersville, to which old Prospect congregation moved, and a strong church still keeps the appointments of the Lord's house there." (P. 187-188)

Details about the early Landersville congregation are sketchy, at best.  Land records (1890, Book 1, Page 506, Oct. 23) and (Book RR, Page 29, March 21) records:

Landersville Cemetery

"On November 19, 1888, H.S. Voley and C.B. Henry convey to W.T. Burch and W.O. Norton (Elders) a parcel of land on which to buld a meeting house for the Landersville Church of Christ.  Also, W.T. and Laura Simmons convey a parcel of land for the construction of the building.  Another parcel of land was purchased by N.S. Boley and C.B. Henry for the same.  The acreage now totaled five acres on which were located a building and an adjoining cemetery.  The cemetery is now under the oversight of the community as a separate entity from the congregation.  Many faithful members of the Lord's church have been laid to rest there."

Today, Landersville numbers about 45.  It supports mission work in Lima, Peru and supports the work of Childhaven.  Worship services are held at 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM each Lord's Day and Bible study is 10:00 AM on Sunday and 7:00 PM on Wednesday.  Faithful brethren meet there for each service.  For directions to our congregation click here.
